'Heart Lamp' by Banu Mushtaq Book Review

Review of Heart Lamp by Banu Mushtaq (Translated from Kannada by Deepa Bhasthi) Heart Lamp is a collection of twelve short stories, available in English through the translation of Deepa Bhasthi. The book was originally written in Kannada by Banu Mushtaq, a writer from Hassan in Karnataka. Her work consistently focuses on women and marginalized communities. Through quiet moments and sharp observations, she captures the everyday weight of their lives. Mushtaq began her writing career in the 1980s, emerging as part of the Bandaya Sahitya (Rebel Literature) movement. This movement arose in southwestern India as a response to caste oppression and rigid social hierarchies. It questioned power structures that were long accepted as normal. As one of the few women writing within this space, Mushtaq’s voice carried both resistance and urgency. Over the years, she has published six short story collections, along with a novel, an essay collection, and a poetry collection—all in Kannada...

Review

Rating:4.5/5
Book Length : 244 Chapters + 8 Extras ( Complete)
Volumes : 8
Completely Translated : Yes

It's been quite a time since I have read the book but I still can't stop thinking about it and the characters in it, there are parts of this novel I still reread. Danmei novels have become my comfort novels, whenever I am stressed I pick one and start reading.

To summarize the plot line, Xie Lian ascended twice to godhood and twice he was banished, he was touring the earth after his last banishment when he meets San Lang, a cheerful young boy. And from then on their adventure begin. The plot was well executed; however, the plot might seem a little heavy at some point due to its heavy storyline. However, it was a worth read. I was mesmerized by the 'Hua Cheng's ' character and his views on things. One of his quotes that had always stayed by me is in volume 5 of the book and it goes like:

Xie Lian smiled wistfully. “San Lang, things aren't always that absolute. Sometimes, it's not up to you to decide if the road is easy to walk.”

Hua Cheng said quietly, “I might not be able to decide if the road is easy or not, but whether I walk it is entirely up to me.”

This line "Whether I walk it is entirely up to me' gives me the road not taken vibes of the Robert Frost. However, this was a very emotional line especially coming from Hua cheng, who went through tribulations, did not leave the earth when he was spirit just to wait for Xie Lian and to top it off that wait spanned for 800 years. This novel is full of raw yearning and longing, a slow-burn romance and the couple is one of the sweetest in the Danmei world.

This book has 8 physical volumes. And regarding it's live adaptation, the novel was filmed under the title 'Eternal Faith', the filming is said to be complete but unfortunately, it is speculated that the drama is denied a license to air due to censorship issues in China.
